Spiral Art Education Website: Art projects for the 21st century (Olivia Gude, University of Illinois at Chicago) featuring: NEW classroom-tested art projects that contextualize the making, understanding, and valuing of art within larger cultural frameworks of community, identity, agency, democracy, and quality of everyday life. Projects were developed in University of Illinois at Chicago's teen art program, Spiral Workshop, and in the Contemporary Community Curriculum Initiative, a project with in-service art teachers. ALL NEW art projects that (1) investigate personal, community, and social issues, (2) combine a strong understanding of the formal elements of art with knowledge of the diverse practices of contemporary artmaking, and (3) encourage students and teachers to conceive of themselves as creators and shapers of contemporary culture. Each project includes lesson plans, a description of how the project meets evolving art education objectives, information on relevant contemporary professional artists, and large pictures of student samples as well as essays and links related to the cultural and aesthetic contexts needed to understand and appreciate the artistic practice.
